12 Royal Doulton Game Plates by J H Plant for Tiffany
Gorgeous set of 12 handpainted game bird plates by Royal Doulton. Each is artist signed by J.H. Plant. c.1910. They were also retailed by Tiffany & Company of New York, NY who are well known for dealing in the finest quality. The game birds are all unique and include: Golden Plover, Partridge, Red Legged Partridge, Prairie Hen, Mallard, Plarmigan, Red Grouse (arriving), Capercaille, Red Grouse (leaving), Green Winged Tea, Ryper and Black Game. They are completely handpainted and signed by J H Plant on the front. There is fine gilt work around the edges. The marks include the Royal Doulton logo, Tiffany & Co and are impressed with the date. John Hugh Plant worked at Doulton between 1902-1920. After studying at the Hanley School of Art and serving his apprenticeship at the Brown- Westhead, Moore Pottery in that town, Plant spent many years with Coalport and Wedgwood as a painter of landscapes and animals before joining Doulton in 1902. A versatile artist, his signature is found on many fine pieces depicting views of Venice, Rome and other Italian cities, rustic scenes, old castles, palaces, cathedrals and cottages. His architectural sketches and drawings were of a high order. Other examples of his work include paintings of ships after Turner, fishing boats, barges, yachts, deer and other animals, game birds and fish. Very good condition.
