| For sale is a beautiful early coin silver butter dish with insert by Ball Tompkins & Black of New York NY. c.1839-51. Approximately 7" in diameter and 6 1/2" high to the top of the finial. It weighs 25.91 troy ounces. Script monogram (see photo). Marks include BALL TOMPKINS & BLACK, an unidentified mark, N-Y, and a mark of an arm and hammer. The finial is a pheasant on a log. Beautiful loose repousee design with 4 feet decorated with foliage, shells and flowers. Ball Tompkins & Black were successors to Marquand & Co. in 1839. Partneers were Henry Ball, Erastus O. Tompkins and William Black. They were succeeded by Ball Black & Co. in 1851. They were the leading jewelry house in the nation prior to the rise of Tiffany & Co. and it received many important commissions. Very good condition. | |||||||||||||||
